DESIGN VIEWS VOL. IX
26. Septeber - 17. October 2018
Kunstgewerbemuseum, Matthäikirchplatz, 10785 Berlin (DE)
With the project Design Impressionism, studio b severin focuses on glass in order to investigate effects of the industrial revolution on art. The window-glass used in 19th century Paris in the construction of buildings creates a special atmosphere that inspired impressionist painters in their approach to light.
studio b severin has taken this observation and realised it as a series of objects made from traditionally produced rolled glass. The resulting works, a cuboid table, for example, are everyday objects that adopt the colours and forms of impressionist painting in a poetic way.
Design Views is a new exhibition series featured by the Kunstgewerbemuseum and the Internationales Design Zentrum Berlin.

The In Residence project reaches its tenth edition this year, proposing "Imaginative Rituals" as the theme linking the workshops and experiences at Du Parc Contemporary Suites in Turin. Design that aims to solve a problem or recurring daily need of the individual, material or spiritual, and a possible future collective. As in the previous editions, this year the selected designers pursued a research project together with students on the theme proposed, in a continuous and extremely and productive exchange. LIMITED SUSTAINABILITY
21. - 28.May
KED in Karantin, Avenue Président Général Emile Lahoud, El Jidr Beirut (LBN)
For the first time in Beirut Design Week, the curatorial Studio Quei from Berlin will be unveiling their collection under the theme 'Limited Sustainability'. As we dream of endless possibilities and set attributes for "good" or "bad", we sometimes forget that sustainable design is not inherently democratic. By rethinking overproduction and focusing on locally sourced and produced products, we tend to forget that the rise in price is not just a little obstacle we take for a cleaner conscious, but also excludes most people. Is this a revolution, which is only fought by the ones who can afford it? Can we really make a difference through consuming? Is sustainability a luxury? Limited Sustainability explores the influence of limits to comprehension. It challenges limits as initiator for thought, critique and understanding instead of a stale stagnation.

MUST-HAVE
13–24 September 2013
Ligne Roset City, 37-39 Commercial Road, London E1 1LF, UK
Birgit Severin takes part in the exhibition “Must-Have”, which juxtaposes artworks with items of furniture in the Ligne Roset showroom.
A retail store is a place to browse potential futures. A chain of imaginary events unfolds: the designer imagines possible situations in which the object will appear, the store frames the object and arouses desire, the buyer imagines a future for the object in his or her desired lifestyle. These acts of projection rely on just a few simple visions, invariably optimistic.
“Must-Have” reflects on these implicit futures, pointing to a range of possibilities beyond idealised scenarios and display conventions associated with retail settings. The works on show explore domestic codes, uncanny histories, and uneasy premonitions. They contemplate the body in relation to its environment, the beauty of an illusion, and the elusive concept of home.
Through interweaving artworks with objects destined for the home, the exhibition is also an invitation to consider parallels between artworks and other commodities. As potential lifestyle objects— satisfying human drives for ownership and identification—they raise questions about the role of art in our private lives and especially about the idea of the private home as a place to host art. A designer naturally imagines where and by whom the object of their design will be used. But where do artworks belong and who are their projected users?
